Question: I’ve heard that there are changes to the graduate stipend programs, and am afraid that funding will no longer be available to students in my department or in Master’s Degree programs. What changes are being made, and how will they affect me? M.S., College of Engineering

Answer: To address your concern about funding availability, Tammy (VP for Academic Affairs) corresponded with Vice Provost Luis Falcon, and members of the GPSA Executive Board met with him personally.
Luis Falcon: Let me tell you, that there is some confusion as to what is really being changed. Regarding the SGAs the policy has always been that this type of funding is priority for PhD students. In fact, with minor exceptions there are no SGA lines in departments that do not have a PhD program. Regarding the NUTA funding the change being implemented should, in fact, be attractive to graduate students. We do not anticipate changing the use of NUTA funds by Master students and what we are planning to do is phase out the work requirement component of the award and turn it into scholarships. There are some policy and legal reasons for doing this but our sense is that this is a better option for master students in general. For stand alone Master programs we have had an attractive Dean scholarship program in place that we plan to continue.
Tammy: Essentially, SGA funding and requirements are still the same, while NUTA funding is being transitioned from a work-based program to a scholarship program. There is no reduction in the amount of money for NUTAs, and Master's degree students are still eligible. With the change to a scholarship, that money is non-taxable, where students with the old NUTAs do pay taxes on the money they receive.
Some Colleges are transitioning to the scholarship form of NUTA more slowly than other Colleges, and Colleges and departments are looking for other ways to do the work that has in the past been done by NUTA recipients. The Vice Provost emphasizes, however, that there has been no change in the amount of money available for NUTAs, nor to the eligibility for the program, and the administration feels that ultimately a scholarship is more advantageous to the students than a work-based award.
